The new energy efficiency fund provides financing for creditworthy industrial operations through the Romanian Industrial Energy Efficiency Company (RIEEC). The company makes standardized investments in on-site co-generation systems enabling companies to reduce real energy production expense by as much as 60 percent.
Only 20 percent of the nation's electrical generating plant capacity is less than 15 years old. More than 30 percent of all plants are 25 years old or more. The investment required to refurbish the generation capacity of Romania is estimated at $4 to $5 billion over the long-term, with $900 million for modernization of transmission and distribution systems alone.
